He’s 72 and rides a 2012 BMW S1000RR.  Hooked yet?

We were.  We find it darn near unfathomable that we would ever see a 72 year old on the fastest production land missile manufactured by BMW.  When AC pulls up to the heart therapist’s office, fellow patients can’t believe what they are seeing.  They aren’t even agile enough to mount the sport bike, let alone have the motor skills to handle it in motion.

Yet, AC shows up to most every TEAM Arizona Bike Night, in the flesh and impossible to ignore.  And now, his story:

AZ Lotz BMW S1000RRI was in High School, a senior, and wanted to cater to my transportation interests.  Some guys in my neighborhood rode motorcycles, so my Dad bought a 1958 Zundapp 200 (12 hp) in 1960.  My Dad brought it home in the trunk of his car.  Mom was supportive and just wanted me to be happy.  Unfortunately, I had to let go of it in college.  Life got in the way after college and 50 years later a burning passion brought me back to motorcycles.

In actuality, health issues prompted me to return to two wheels.  I thought I was in very good health.  A standard stress test at age 69 revealed some heart issues and required an emergency surgery to take place in 24 hours.  It hit me like a ton of bricks…not much time to think about things.  They put a stint into my heart and the next morning, upon release, my artery blew out,  and I fell on the bench as I exited the hospital.  The doctors quickly stopped the bleeding and readmitted me into the hospital.

Three near-death instances made me stop and think about life. I was struggling to wrap my head around the mysteries of life, and then I read an article about the BWMS1000RR and immediately fell in love with it.  After multiple monthly visits to Victory BMW, I could no longer resist the BMW Sport colored motorcycle.  I hadn’t ridden for 50 years.

We’ve said it countless times.  When motorcycling is in the blood…IT IS IN THE BLOOD!  A 50-year hiatus could not stop this man from realizing his dreams.

To some, AC’s decision to ride at his age may seem irrational.  For AC, it was anything but.  He took the Basic RiderCourse to ensure he was ready to ride.

When I started riding, the motorcycle came out of the trunk of the car, and I had to learn everything on my own.  The course was nice because all those lessons that took me years to learn, and in hard fashion, a typical person can learn in two days.  It is fantastic!

We applaud AC for going after his dreams and making motorcycling a vital part of life after heart surgery.  We also ask you to join us in letting go of all the excuses that prevent us from making our lives exactly what we want them to be.
