TEAM Arizona Rider of the Month January 2013

The likelihood of starting a riding career beyond the age of sixty is pretty slim.  It takes a particular type of person to make that happen.  Dean is one of these individuals; his sense of humor oozed from his responses to the Rider of the Month survey we provide.  When asked about what challenges him about riding most, he says, “Hauling moose out of the pucker brush ”  Transplants from Alaska will smile at that comment; others, like your author, will remain simultaneously amused and confused.

Even though he started his riding career two years ago by taking the TEAM Arizona Basic RiderCourse on his 67th birthday, he hasn’t missed much.  He loves the camaraderie among riders and feels like he has friends everywhere!

He enjoys riding his Honda 750 Spirit along Vulture Mine Road, but wouldn’t mind a new horse in the stable.  He’s even worked out an interesting arrangement with his wife for his next ride.  “My wife tells me I can upgrade to a Harley on my 70th birthday if I take out a $1,000,000 policy and promise not to wear a helmet,” quips Dean.

Here are some additional responses to the Rider of the Month survey:

What piece of advice would you give new riders?  Ask questions and get lots of practice at slow speeds!

What one (1) piece of information would you pass along to all riders?  Cars don’t see you…even when they’re looking directly at you.

What is one thing you wish you knew when first started riding motorcycles? The importance of coordinating rear brake with front brake… had an interesting ½ second that taught me that.

Riders, we want to honor YOU!  If you want to become a TEAM Arizona’s Rider of the Month, entering is SIMPLE.
