We owe it to ourselves to keep our motorcycles and scooters as safe, reliable, and roadworthy as possible.  Want to keep your motorcycle happy?  Make sure it has oil in it!  Without engine oil, and regardless of age, our engines will seize and die.  The great thing is that we can easily check to make sure we have enough oil at all times.

Remembering our pre-ride inspection check list T-CLOCS, we know that “O” is for oil.  Before we get to the actual checking of the oil, do we know why it is so important?

OIL:  What it does.

Oil serves a wide variety of functions:

  • Cools down an engine
  • Provides lubrication between metal components
  • Collects and transports minor debris (fillings, dust, dirt, carbon) away and into the filter to be deposited safely.

CHECKING YOUR OIL

First, consult your owner’s manual and/or service manual for your motorcycle.  Next, follow the directions.  It is that simple.  Note that some motorcycles have dipsticks and may require the motorcycle to be upright, on the center stand, or on their side stand.  How do you know?  Check the manual.

Some motorcycles have a sight glass to determine level.  They may require the bike to be on its side stand, center stand, or upright when checking the level.  How do you know?  Check the manual (are you noticing a theme?)Motorcycle Oil Check

If your motorcycle should be a little low, make sure to only use MOTORCYCLE SPECIFIC OIL.  The generic automobile oil might not be best for your motorcycle.  The manufacturer will specify which additives and oil ratings are best for that specific motorcycle.  Deviation from motorcycle manufacturer recommendations may result in damage to the engine or clutch.

Always follow recommended manufacturer service intervals.  Extending beyond recommended service intervals could create additional wear on the engine and its components, thus decreasing the life of the engine.

END RESULT

At the end of the day, our goal is to have a fun-filled, confidence inspiring ride.  Checking your oil during your pre-ride inspection is just one piece to a larger puzzle to ensure riding nirvana.
