Arizona Strategic Highway Safety Plan

TEAM Arizona has been asked by the Arizona Department of Transportation to participate in a cycle task force to enhance rider safety and improve the environment for motorcyclists.  We are excited to lead the charge for the Arizona motorcycling community to ensure a better ride for all.

WHAT IS THE AZ SHSP?

Federal regulations require all states to have a Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) that provides a comprehensive framework for reducing fatalities and serious injuries on public roadways. The state’s Department of Transportation leads development of its SHSP in cooperation with local, state, federal and other safety stakeholders. Under the completed SHSP, all highway safety programs in the state can leverage resources and work together to address transportation safety issues.

Arizona’s first SHSP was completed in 2007. It is currently being updated and scheduled for completion in early 2014.

The plan update requires various task forces to meet this summer to look at specific and effective strategies for reducing fatal and serious injury crashes in Arizona. One of the task forces is on “Vulnerable Road Users” which includes peds, bicyclists, motorcyclists and older drivers.  The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) manages the project.

While TEAM Arizona is specifically charged with working on the motorcycling task force, the plan will encompass the following elements affecting the motoring public:

WHO WILL THIS AFFECT?

MotorcycleThe plan will drive the state’s roadway planning activities for the next seven years.  TEAM Arizona’s input will affect all Arizona motorists, including motorcyclists.  Ultimately, we hope our efforts with the planning committee will result in reduced motorcycle crashes, reduced motorcyclist fatalities, increased rider safety, and a better overall riding experience for Arizona motorcyclists.
