Luc's TipsDo you ever give much thought to your handlebar grips?  Handlebar grips are very important because they can provide input on the motorcycles handling.  They are a direct connection to being able to maneuver our motorcycle at all speeds.  Hand grips can also play a role in rider comfort.  So if your grips are worn out and even moving around on the bar, replacement may be in order.  For that, we have some simple tips.

Before we venture too far into this project, we recommend having your local dealership or reputable repair shop perform this type of service.  It can save you time and possibly frustration.  If you do decided do DIY, make sure to have a service manual for your motorcycle by your side; they always come in handy.

OLD HAND GRIP REMOVAL

New Motorbike GripsThere are a few ways to make this happen.  Some motorcycles, especially on the throttle side, require the installer to loosen cables or undo switch housing.  Some just have screws at the end of the bar which makes removal a snap.  Make sure you understand what is required before moving forward.

A large percentage of motorcycles don’t require any switch housing or cables to be loosened, so we can simply remove the bar ends and cut the grips off with a utility blade.  If you choose to cut them off, make sure you don’t cut any wires or gouge the handlebar.  A slick way to remove the old grips would be to shoot compressed air into the innermost portion of the grip while pulling from the far end as you shoot the air.  If we’re lucky, the grip will fly right off.

HANDLEBAR CLEANING

Use rubbing alcohol or adhesive remover and a rag to remove remnants of the previous grips. Make sure the grips and the adhesive that attached them to the metal is completely gone before proceeding.  We want the handlebar to be free of residue and any type of lubricant before we install the new grips.

INSTALL MOTORCYCLE HAND GRIPS

There are a ton of grip options.  Primarily, grip choice comes down to handlebar size, riding style, comfort goals, and personal preference.  Grips come with different size holes.  The one that is slightly larger is meant to be installed on the side of the throttle, which is usually the right side.  Obviously, the other grip goes on the other side.

Before installing, know that you will want to work quickly as you’ll be using glue for this process.  Apply a grip glue inside the grip opening and along the handlebar. The edge of one side of the grip is raised, while the other edge is not. Slide the grip onto the handlebar, raised edge first, before the glue begins to dry. Keep pushing until the raised edge of the grip leaves a small gap from switch assembly. Make sure glue doesn’t get between the grip and throttle housing as it could possibly inhibit throttle action.  Once secure, squeeze the grip to help the glue set.  Allow the grip to set per manufacturer’s recommendation.  For added safety, you may even want to consider safety wiring your hand grips if you are engaged in off-road or track riding.

Finish up the other side, button up any loosened cables or switch assemblies, and get ready to ride!

If you try to fit your own grips, we’d love to hear your story.  Send us an email (info@motorcycletraining.com) or shoot us a message on the TEAM  Arizona Facebook page.

Have fun on your next ride with  your comfortable, stylish grips!
